Resolutions of an Intern

Hello girls,
How are you enjoying your last day of 2011?    I am having a lovely time in Toronto, but I ready to leave for New York in a few days!  Flora,  I'll call you on the way in from the airport!

Like Flora, I am very much looking forward to a peaceful New Year's Eve.  Last year, I attended the most magical party in Paris, but this year I am so excited to spend the night in among friends.  I will be ringing in the New Year at a small, intimite dinner party hosted by Kate and Bill, a newly wed-couple I met a few years back.  I cannot wait because Kate is a phenomenal chef and they always invite the coolest, most interesting people to their parties.  I am so honored to be included!

And as always, I have a few resolutions that I vow to keep in 2011:

1.  Take more pictures (using my awesome new camera!)

2.  Stay in touch  (Letters, phone calls, even emails)

3.  "Fly above the haters" (No more negative people!  If you suck, you're gone!)

4.  Take more road trips

5.   Read.  (Instead of using Facebook or checking emails when I have free time!)

Wishing you both a happy and healthy New Year!  I am looking forward to more Eternal Intern antics in 2011!

Love always,

Bisous xx Ophelia

2011 here we come!

Girls! So nice to hear from you and I’m so happy to hear your Christmases were a blast! As for me, I’ve had a wonderful holiday, and sadly tomorrow = back to the reality of a snow covered Manhattan…boohoo!

What’s awesome though, is that this year it’ll just be me and el novio spending NYE together! No plans, no fuss, no parties, no nothing – just the two of us. Since I just started work a few months ago and he’s still working on finishing his MBA (and paying off those horrible MBA bills) we’ve decided to ring in the New Year in a calmer way this year.

My plan is…I’m going to surprise him and prepare our fave meal, a cheese fondue (I know... not insanely elaborate!), get some good bubbly, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream for desert and just have a quiet, fun, cozy night! I’ve gotten the typical NYE corny hats, party accessories and such, just to add a little fun!

I guess it’s true, the older you get, the more you appreciate the simple things life throws your way. In all honesty nothing could make me happier this year than to spend NYE solo with him. It just seems perfect! I’m also thinking 2011 is going to be a great year! 2010 has been awesome for me, but I see a lot of god things happening in 2011! I don’t have any fixed resolutions (regardless, I always break them!). All I’m hoping for is happiness!

Oh girls, look at the time, I must jet…today’s my last full day of holiday L  But, if I don’t get to chat prior to tomorrow evening (I’ll be busy cooking back home!), then HAPPY NEW YEAR to you! And speak to you in 2011… Rose, Ophelia: get ready, 2011 is going to be amazing for us, I can feel it! Raises your glasses tomorrow night and cheers to that!

The Hollywood Campus

Good morning/ afternoon!

Needless to say, I have been enjoying catching up on some much needed sleep! I have never been, nor will I ever be a morning person!  So far my week of sleeping in has been nothing short of glorious and although I am ready to take on 2011, I am most definitely dreading returning to work on the 3rd.  I probably wouldn't feel the same way if my hours were 11-4 rather than the usual 8-8!  What can I say, I NEED my beauty sleep...

The holidays in Los Angeles are quite hilarious because the city is abandoned by all of its usual residents that return to their real homes, usually to the East Coast! I don't know what the exact stats are, but I literally don't know a single person in the entertainment industry here that is actually a true Angelino!  In fact, LA often feels like a college campus.  Most of the people are from abroad and despite the tolerable living costs it seems that everyone (no matter their age) feels the need to room up with their group of friends.  I can't tell you the number of acquaintances I have that live in 3 bedroom flats and are as domestic as I was during my college days!

I am having a difficult time committing to any plans for NYE.  To be honest, I would rather stay at home in my sweats and order pizza and drinks exorbitant amounts of champagne, but alas, if I am going to spend the holiday away from the family I have decided to use the evening as a networking opportunity!  So the plan is to go out, dazzle and meet new people!  I think I will opt for the house party option though rather than the usual bar scene.  I don't think I can handle another NYE stranded on a corner trying to secure a taxi home!

What are your plans?  F, still with the family in Miami?  O, still in Tdot?

The Stranded Intern

Hello my dear girls,
I hope you both had a very Merry Christmas!  I was close to spending mine in the lovely terminal 2F at Charles de Gaulle airport where I was delayed for 8 hours on Monday.  Between the delay, hundreds of canceled flights and stranded passengers and the terrible cold I was fighting, it was a mess!  The only thing that lifted my spirits was the fact that I saw an equally stranded John Galliano waiting at the airport as well.  Is it strange that he made me feel better?  ha!  Well, after an 8 hour flight, a sick passenger (who had to be evacuated from the plane by EMT when we landed!) and then customs taking some of my presents, it was a journey from hell.  But in the end, I made it and I am now home for two weeks!  One week in Toronto and one week in New York!  So excited!

Yesterday I spent a lovely, peaceful Christmas with my family and the boyfriend taking pictures on my brand new Nikon D3100 camera!  My cousin just had a baby girl a few weeks ago so I had the perfect model!  Oh girls, you just wait, I am going to channel my inner Patrick Demarchelier and wow you with photos of Paris when I get back!  As for aujourd'hui, instead of facing the horrors of Boxing Day, my sister and I are going for a stroll in the ravine by our house to take some Winter Wonderland photos.  I hear it is supposed to snow today!   After that, who knows what the day will hold.  That's what I love about the Christmas holidays!

I hope you are both having a restful vacation and I can't wait to hear all about it!

The Office Christmas Party

Rose, 2011 will be an amazing year!

Chicas, I can’t wait to head on vacation! I’m off on the 24th for a week and couldn’t be happier! I am so excited to spend some time relaxing and reenergizing! On top of that I’m spending Christmas with el novio this year! I’ll be experiencing a real Spanish Christmas…kinda funny!! Until then I have a mound of work to finish…and now…a hang over to get over! Yes…oh yes…last night was the Office Christmas Party….

It was very impromptu, random and fun! As no official party was organized, basically it was me and a bunch of peeps from the Communication & Marketing teams! We all met up at a Pub on 48th btw Mad and 5th and we all had much too much beer/cider…much too much!

What’s amazing though, are the stories that came out of last night. From the PR coordinator spilling the beans on how she has a crush on the mailman…to one of the assistant’s who informed us she actually had MARRIED a mailman (haha!)…to a Marketing guy giving us some Inside info on some of the execs salaries…haha it was hilarious!

An instantaneous the bond was oddly created between us. I mean I've been in this office for around 5 months and until yesterday I didn't even know some of these people! It's amazing what a few beers, stupid (really stupid) jokes, and laughter will do!

The evening was amazing…the morning after is a little rough…but luckily we’re ALL having a rough time! I've seen a few Advil Migraine bottles on some desks….ah la la!

Bisous chicas!

A fuzzy-headed, but happy Flora xoxo

Epic Win for Legacy

Good (I use the adjective loosely) afternoon!

I just spent half the day with my t-shirt inside out!  OMG I am so embarrassed. I'm contemplating leaving it this way so as to pretend I am making a fashion statement, instead of admitting that I was too rushed this morning to notice!  Ugh, I can't believe nobody told me!

Well I hope your day is going better than mine!  I definitely need a pint or two at the end of today, which I will no doubt treat myself to before attending a 3D screening of Tron Legacy!  I have been excited about this movie for pretty much ever!  The original is epic and more than anything I am looking forward to seeing The Dude, Jeff Bridges, kick some major on-screen ass!

With the holidays approaching I have been reflecting a lot on the year passed and the year to come and I have decided a few things.

1- I will finish my script in early 2011!
2- I will get a promotion from paid internship to at least production assistant at my current job!
3- I will finally plan a reunion to see you ladies!  It has been years since we were all together and we have to plan a reunion asap.  All we have to do is decide on which of our cities we want to reunite in?  NYC? LA? Paris?

Safe travels this week and have a wonderful time with the families!  Good luck getting out of Paris, Ophelia!  I heard getting out of London/Paris is near to impossible at the moment!

The Search for 'The One'

Hello mes amies,
Rose,  I was part of a Secret Santa gift exchange yesterday and someone gave a juicebox (apple to be exact) with a ten euro bill wrapped around it.  I thought it was pretty cheeky and funny!  hehe!

Speaking of the Secret Santa.  I have to tell you both about a great soirée I attended with L last night.  It was hosted by a fabulous group of American expats called Forever in France.  The Christmas event was hosted at the gorgeous apartment of an American woman named Kitty and the crowd was absolutely delightful.  I sipped champagne and munched on delicious canapés while chatting with some uber chic ladies.  Think the Upper East Side of Paris (Flora, you would have loved it!), the who's who of the Parisian expat community... and yours truly was right in the thick of it all!

Interestingly, I started talking to a Canadian woman who, after a length career in the film business,  has since made the switch to fashion.  Always forthcoming with my status as an Eternal Intern, I explained that I have had some difficulty as of late getting my foot in the door.  Well, her advice/motto was short and sweet:  It only takes ONE.  One person, one handshake, one conversation.  In Paris and especially in fashion, it is who you know and what they will do for you.  I could paper this town with my resume, but it will always lose out to the girl who knows that ONE person.  Her advice:  Continue applying (it can't hurt!), but mingle, network, socialize and eventually, at the right moment, that one magical conversation will open the locked door!

Evidemment, I was très inspired and intend to fill my new Smythson planner (hint hint Santa!) with events, presentations, workshops, everything!  All this time my search for The One has meant the perfect job, but perhaps there are other "ones" I have to find along the way.   Looks like I am going to be one busy social butterfly in 2011!

I'm off to the Monet exhibit at the Grand Palais with L!

Photocopy 101

Rose! What did you get in the end? I've got a friend who got the most wacked out thing for her Secret Santa: a massive random, so big, so funny!!

Well chicas, things have gotten a slight bit better in Flora’s world :) I had a wonderful weekend with a most fabulous college friend who came to visit, A.! We walked out butts off, and went to this awesome little bar in the LES called PDT…Please Don’t Tell! It’s an amazing little place, hidden via a telephone booth in a Hot Dog Diner…

Speaking of work, things are going well…Well that is, until this afternoon when I was standing by the photocopier and someone’s paper got stuck.

The guy who was printing the paper is some big shot in the PR department. We’ve met a handful of times, and he’s never been able to remember my name, or even recognize who I am…

I peered away, fearing he may ask me for help…and of course he did…and oh so kindly as you can imagine (just a tad bit of sarcasm there). He said:
“Hey ‘you’, can you get over here and help me with this? You’re an inten aren’t you? You should know how to do this.”

I almost laughed! Are you kidding me? Was he being serious?

For starters, I have a name! Secondly, I am no longer an intern, and have worked my ass off to get this full-time position. And, finally even if I was still an intern why would I be a photocopier specialist? And why would that make me more capable of helping him than anyone else around?

I ultimately did help him, stupidly, but I was in shock. How can someone be so disrespectful and so ignorant? When did it become OK to treat interns like sh*t? As an intern, I guess I often just took all these tasks as part of the job description, but now as a full-time employee, I can't believe interns are belittled to such tasks. Hell I probably had more degrees as an intern than that big shot has!! What has the intern world come to!

Signing off for now,

Flora, a perplexed Eternal Intern at heart…

Holidays On An EI Budget

Thanks for sharing the much needed inspiration, O!

Happy Golden Globe Nominations Day!  I couldn't be more thrilled about the competition this year, and I am particularly excited for The Social Network and Inception.  They were both so fresh, with amazing direction, acting and a stellar script.  Despite it all, my favorite of 2010 so far is Blue Valentine.  If you guys haven't seen it,  go now!  Ryan Gosling is my favorite actor of our generation. Such a gem!

So with the holidays fast approaching I have been budgeting and re-budgeting trying to figure out how to stretch the minuscule amount of money in my bank account for a few gifts and some holiday fun.

Luckily, my office is doing Secret Santa this year and I couldn't be happier.  I was wondering what I should get for my supervisors, but I no longer need to worry!  With a $10 limit, Secret Santa is actually ideal for this intern's budget.

What can you possibly get though for $10 these days?  Gift certificates are too lame, so I might just head down to a farmer's market this weekend and have a look around for something fun.  Any suggestions?  All are welcome!

An Intern's Inspiration

Hi girls,
Oh Flora, I am sure by Monday your blunder will be forgotten!  Sounds pretty awkward, though!

I hope you both had a nice restful weekend.  I am completely exhausted after the weekend of all weekends.  I have been go go go with L, my new partner in crime,  since she moved to Paris two weeks ago.  We met on the terrace of La Palette (isn't that where all fabulous friendships begin?!) while she was vacationing in Paris in July.  When she returned to Los Angeles we kept in touch via email until last month, when I received the best news:  L was moving to Paris!   Since her arrival, we have been painting the town pink!  Hot chocolate at Deux Magots, champagne at Le Fumoir, dinner at La Societe!  It has been one fun night after another!

Not only is L a blast to be around, she is an inspiration to Eternal Interns everywhere.  Over a cafe crème at a cute neighborhood spot (yes, we even live in the same quartier!), I got the back story on this chic nurse-turned-LA film producer!   Basically, L decided that life was too short to continue in a career she wasn't passionate about, so she set her sights on Hollywood!  And did it ever pay off!  Not only does she have her dream job, but she also splits her time between Los Angeles and Paris!  Not bad, non?  Long story short, I have such a great time with L because she is a reminder that the safe path is not always the right one to take.  Sure, it must have been extremely difficult making such a massive career change, but look how well it turned out!

Girls, I know the three of us have taken some flack from detractors for choosing such "fluffy," "useless" or "superficial" fields, but we will definitely have the last laugh when we are film producers or luxury executives or magazine editors!  haha!  The lovely L is a constant reminder that anything is possible. And boy or boy does she ever live life to the fullest.  But isn't that what it's all about?

Must run, les filles!  L scored last minute tickets to the ballet!  Swan Lake is calling my name!

Confidential Information (everyone speaks about...)

Rose! Haha! You want a pimp ride and I want my chauffeur!

Tuesday may not have been top for me....well girls Friday ain't either! I feel horrible, really horrible. My boss asked me to go to a meeting in her place this morning. I was overjoyed by the responsibility he was entrusting me with, especially after what happened on Tuesday.

Anyhow, the meeting went brilliantly. I really hit it off with the agency that came in. We spoke about our upcoming event they are bidding to work on. The conversation really span over a ton of things, including previous and future events, agencies, execs… It seemed so natural, so easy!

Easy that is, until my boss called me into her office to give her a recap. I started going through what had been said and the questions they asked…until she said:
“No! They asked you that?!? I hope you didn’t answer!”…

Sh*t! I actually had answered, and gone into in depth detail! The question revolved around some future (VIP) events the magazine will be hosting, and I really didn’t think it would pose a problem…Right then and there I literally wanted to crumble to the ground …I must have turned red, but instead of losing it I said…
“Hmm no, no, of course not…” I replied.

H., my boss, clearly new it was a lie. Her eyes starred so deeply at me, I felt as though she was starring right through me (it was kind of scary!). There was a long silence (a very awkward one) followed by her just waving me out of her office…She had seen through my lie...

I’m now back at my desk and I feel terrible…How was I supposed to know that info was confidential?!? Seriously, this info has been going around the office since I got here a few months ago! Everyone has been speaking about this event! How was I supposed to know I had crossed the "invisible" line of what to say and what not to say? This is ridiculous! I've HEARD people speak about this event IN MEETINGS with other agencies!! Why am I being put on the spot for this!!

I'm far from being an idiot...hell I have more degrees than my boss has! But I sure feel like a total failure now! Ah!…this is a bad week! TGIF!

An Intern's Dream Ride

Flora,  I'm so sorry about your terrible morning, but it could have been worse.   Don't ask me how, but I'm sure it could have been!  Ophelia, that encounter is sweeter than you could have ever hoped for!

So today I was asked to run to the coffee shop and bring back about a dozen coffees for the crew.   I had to bring to my supervisor's attention that although I am an intern, and therefore obviously expected to have about a million helping hands, I simply did not have the means of bringing back all of the orders without major spillage.

To my sheer and utter surprise, I was granted the extremely rare privilege of driving to the coffee shop and back.  When the production assistant handed me the keys to any intern's dream ride... THE STUDIO GOLF CART.... I nearly had a coronary!  Oh it was glorious!

Now imagine me, an eternal intern, driving along the narrow cobble stone streets of the lot, feeling like a princess on her chariot, and then picture me coming face to face with the needle that inevitably burst my bubble!  One of the celebrities (who have their offices on the lot), drove past me in his own personal golf cart, which made my cart seem less like a chariot and more like a death-mobile in comparison.   His ride was pimped out, from the rims to the steering wheel, and as we drove past each other, it was made very clear who was the A-lister and who was just the intern.

NOW imagine me, an eternal intern, driving along the narrow cobble stone streets of the lot feeling like exactly that... an eternal intern, fetching about a dozen coffees, and struggling to make sure they don't spill as I drive along the bumpy road!

Mark my words, my friends, one day I will have a pimped out golf-cart of my very own and that will be the day when I know that I have made it in Hollywood!  But until that day, I best get back to the shmoozing!

A Slice of Humble Pie

Bonjour girls!
The universe works in mysterious ways!  Remember Lorena?  The terrible intern at X Magazine who made my summer a living hell? Well I saw her yesterday and it is true what they say, revenge is a dish best served cold!  I was doing a little Christmas Shopping in the Marais and who do I run into working at a shop?  Lorena!  She didn't even try to hide the look of horror on her face when I walked in and she was especially frigid when I went over to say hello.

I am not sure if I told you, but after I quit X Mag, Lorena was fired for being so terrible to me.  She got the axe two days later!  Needless to say, she blames me for all her ensuing trouble!  With a forced smile plastered to her face, Lorena struggled through meaningless small talk and then congratulated me on my fabulous new job at Vogue!  I believe "Must be nice!" were her exact words.  But here is the problem...  Since when do I work at Vogue?  She must have gotten her rumors crossed but I didn't correct her.  It was just too funny!

I left the store and called another X intern who informed me that after I left so suddenly a rumor started that I had been hired by the American Vogue Paris bureau.  No one thought to follow up or confirm this rumor, so months later it is still circulating.  Apparently, I am an inspiration to the newest generation of X interns.  Everyone wants to be like the girl who interned at X Magazine then left to work at Vogue!

Well, Lorena may one day learn the truth, but until then, I will always cherish the day that Lorena choked down that piece of humble pie!

New York Crush Hour

What is this world coming to Rose! How can some people be so disrespectful and rude? Be it in L.A. or New York, people are all the same, and just as rude and insensitive. People nowadays only think of themselves.

Why this sudden anger? Well, get this, every morning I live the horror all too many New Yorkers face: morning Crush hour on the 6 train. I specify the word “crush” because that is exactly what it is: a frenzy of tense, anxious individuals all rushing to get on the 1st train they see and crush their way into it. If I had the means I’d take a cab, or better yet, hire a driver, but on my sad little entry-level employee starting salary, I can barely even afford my monthly Metropass.

Anyhow, I had a meeting this morning with some pretty important peeps I wanted to impress. It was one of my first important meetings as an Ex-Intern and a big deal…So…I got all vamped up with this adorable ivory dress…Yes my friends I was dressed to impress! I rushed to the 77th street station, fit my way into the car, and miraculously found a seat. It felt so nice to finally sit on a morning train…

That is, until the train made a quick turn and my neighbour's Dunkin Donuts’ coffee found its way onto my beautiful ivory dress! Yes, yes mi amigas, it’s as though I myself had taken a dunk into the coffee !

I was infuriated but kept calm…waiting for the polite “I’m so sorry” or perhaps “Can I get your dry-cleaning” or even “Oh my goodness”… Instead, I got a “Shit my coffee!”.

Excuse me??? Have people become so insanely rude and self-absorbed in New York that they can’t even excuse themselves when they ruin MY outfit?? My best meeting outfit?? My ONLY meeting outfit?? I don’t know how many “dress to impress” outfits you girls have, but my meager starting salary only really entitles me to one! And on top of it all, my laundry is at the Laundromat!! Ahhh! I was hopeless! I was infuriated! I got up, got mad, swore a little (a lot!) and got off at the next station…ran home…put together some black from head to toe outfit…and made it LATE to my meeting!

What a shitty way to start the day…the week…and what a failure of a meeting! How professional does it look when you arrive 30 minutes late to your own meeting! And wearing the oddest outfit (Remember where I work! Major feminine publisher in event planning!!! I am surrounded by Louboutins, my JCrew addiction doesn't always cut it!) I feel so crummy and to top it all off: I still stink of coffee! Ahhh!! Praying my boss doesn't find out!

New Yorkers pep up your manners, and stop being so selfish!

An infuriated (and coffee stained!) Flora xoxo

A Pat On The Head

I love the role reversal, Flora!  Absolutely brilliant!

Ready for this one, ladies?

This morning, the exec producer literally patted me on the head!   Can you flippin believe that?  I don't know how to take the gesture and am slightly insulted.  The way I see it, the intentions stem from one of the following beliefs:

1- I am physically short enough that I literally temped him to show his appreciation by patting me on my head.

2- He was patronizing me!

3- He just wanted to touch me... ew?

It was such a bizarre gesture and now I am left feeling perplexed beyond belief.  What am I his pet?  Actually the more I think about, the more mortified I am!

If it happens again I might try to morph the movement into a high five!  I high five I can definitely deal with, but a pat on the head is just too unusual.  I mean what if the assistants and other crew members followed suit?  Can you just imagine?

'Thanks for the coffee, Rose!'  -pat on the head.

'You're in early today, Rose!' -pat on the head.

OMG, what a nightmare!

Nothing is Eternal...

O! Haha! That’s hilarious! I can’t believe someone would be so absent-minded as to leave your email on the CV they copied FROM you! Lol!

I had a pretty fun weekend myself. I was at a benefit last night at Cipriani’s and literally danced the night away with el novio! It was a beautiful party filled with very interesting guests…including one with which I had a very unexpected encounter…Remember V.? She’s the girl I went to school with, and who’s parents’ Rolodex got her a sick job at the X Group in communications for the luxury brand.

Well, get this, we ran into each other in the restroom as we were powdering up, and I made an incredible discovery: her stint up the yellow brick road of eternal employment is over! She’s been laid off, AND, she’s doing an internship!! Yes, the girl who looked so down on me, during my internship at the X-group just a few months ago, is now herself interning at a tiny PR firm in Soho! The yellow brick road, ain’t so yellow and bright anymore is it!?!? It’s one thing to go up the ladder…it’s another thing to tumble down!!

We chatted a little bit, she had heard from a mutual friend that I had finally gotten myself a full-time gig, and I could tell her pride had dropped and that she was looking to me for help…a contact…advice…She was desperate. In 2010 apparently one’s parents’ Rolodex just doesn’t quite suffice…I’ll be honest, seeing her, I felt bad. Having been in her shoes I know what it’s like: the pain, the uncertainty, the anxiety…

And so, with that, I did something I haven’t yet done…I pulled my pocketbook out and handed to her, what is to me the “Oscar” of a newly hired full-time staffer: my business card. I had a brief moment of intense pride, as she took the card from me. She analysed it, reading my title; felt the embossed print; and looked at me with a smile. Then and there I felt good! Flora, the Eternal Intern who had fought her way up that yellow brick road to Eternal Employment had finally made it! Wohooo!

I agreed to speak over coffee, but that’s as far as it will go. V. too will have to learn you have to fight hard today to get what you want!

The Case of the Stolen Resumé

Bonjour girls,

Well girls, do I have a story for you!  This one will definitely make it into the record books for the dumbest intern decision.  A few weekends ago, I ran into a friend of a friend named S.  We started talking (and commiserating) about resumés, the job search, etc.  Since we are both in the same boat, S suggested we exchange resumés and give each other feedback.  No harm in that, right?  Wrong!

S was super impressed with my CV (I was less than impressed with hers, but that is beside the point!) and she asked if she could format hers to look a little more like mine.  Sure, no problem.  After all, I don't own the Times New Roman font!  I gave her the go ahead to copy my format, just the format...   Well, "copy" doesn't even being to describe what this girl did!

Fast forward to Friday.  Out of the blue, I get a phone call from Eloise, a good friend of mine with a stellar job at a Parisian magazine.  Eloise is hiring a new intern and early this week she received a resume that really stood out. Well, after closer examination, Eloise realized that the resumé was too familiar... because it was MY resume!  Heureusement,  Eagle-eye Eloise noticed something was fishy and broke the case of the stolen resumé!  S had basically substituted my name for hers and sent the resumé out to who knows how many people!

Here's a little tip if you are going to plagiarize a resumé:  Don't forget to change the email address!  Oops!

Perhaps I should copyright my CV!  Ha!

What's for Lunch?

Ophelia, I know the feeling. I battled long and hard to get to this full-time gig…It’s a tough battle!

Girls, I have a much less important problem on my hands: I haven’t had a lunch date in a week!

Let me explain…Ever since I started here, I struggle every day to figure out with who the hell I’m going to have lunch with. All the girls already have their little posses and so few have ever come over to invite me to lunch!

It’s a problem I never faced as an intern. Back in my EI days, the “intern” solidarity meant that come noon BBMs would be buzzing, emails would be flying and whispering would be whizzing…it was time for lunch, and we would all go together!

Today, however, as a full-time “employee”, this scene has been reversed…come noon, I’m sitting at my desk, my stomach rumbling, and my phone & email resolutely quiet. What is worst, is that this one co-worker litteraly came by my desk this morning and asked my neighbour “do you wanna grab lunch?”, my neighbour declined (too much work), and so I expected her to turn to me…the new girl…the nice, pleasant new face in the office…but NO! The little scoundrel just walked away…I didn’t even have the time to offer her my pleasant company over a Pret a Manger salad!

But get ready, I then get my courage up, go to her desk and offer her my company......and......she looked so confused at my offer and so un-enthusiastic, so bored by me...I just let it go...I honestly litterally just walked back to my desk so perplexed...

WTF?? Am I a freak?? Do I seem oh so uninteresting that no one wants to have lunch with me? I literally feel like I’m back at elementary school…the new kid that sits alone with her lunch box in the cafeteria. Who thought landing that amazing full-time job would lead to anxiety around lunch?!

This feeling is terrible and I just can't sit here and wait for it to pass! Listen, as I’m writing you two my courage has suddenly risen… I’m not only gonna get a lunch date…I’m gonna get myself an A-class lunch date! Heading over to my bosses office to see if she‘s free…If I’m going to plea for a lunch date, it better be a good one! Will report back after lunch ;)

The Intern and the Red Flags

Hello girls,
Rose, I feel your pain.  I had a hell of a day yesterday!  As you know, I am only applying to jobs, no internships.  It has been a bit of a challenge since there are no jobs!  That said, I was thrilled on Friday when I found what sounded like the most fabulous job!  It was as if the position was created for me.  I immediately replied.  Their response came almost instantly, inviting me for an interview on Monday.  I should have known things were too perfect, I should have suspected it was too good to be true.  As soon as I arrived, red flags galore, am I surprised it ended so badly?  Nope.

Red flag # 1:  I arrived 10 minutes early for my 1pm interview only to learn that my interviewer was at a meeting and would be at least 30 minutes late.  Great!

Red flag # 2:  On their site, the job title blatantly said "junior editor and assistant to the Editor in Chief."  When I arrived, it had conveniently changed to an INTERNSHIP!   Lying about the nature of the job to get people in the door?  Bad form!

Red flag # 3:  When I politely informed the interviewer that I was looking for a permanent position and not an internship, he completely ignored me!  Then he handed me a little booklet.  When I opened it, I saw that it was an EXAM!   I felt like I was about to write the SATs!  Not one for pop quizzes, I firmly refused to write the two hour test!

What is this world coming to when internships are disguised as jobs and standardized multiple choice questions?  I know they say "beggars can't be choosers" but in this case, I chose to walk out that door without looking back!

Back to the drawing board...

Warning: Raging Intern

Good (and I use the word loosely) morning ladies!

I am so f***ing pissed!  I walked into work this morning after a relaxing long weekend only to find that my computer had disappeared from the usual spot.  The production assistant had set me up in the corner on this antique laptop that I was using for maintaining production lists.  You guys know that I like to get in quite early to work, so as to catch up and be ready for all the chaos that is usually headed my way by about 9:10!  Well, this morning I got in and - poof- my computer was gone!

Where had it gone?  Well after sitting around for 45 minutes asking myself the very same question and waiting for the assistant to stroll into work, I found out that she had taken it home to work on a few things herself.  Apparently her personal computer was in for repairs and she meant to message me, but it totally slipped her mind!

OF COURSE it did!  And do you want to know why?  BECAUSE I AM STILL JUST AN INTERN!  What could I possibly have to do that is so important, right?  Furthermore, an intern's time is just NOT as valuable, right?  What would an intern care if they could have slept for an extra half an hour this morning, right?

I am fuming!
Needless to say, it is going to be a long mother-f***ing day!

The Thankful Intern

Hello my dear girls,
I hope you are having a lovely Thanksgiving!  I must say, one of the hardest things about living in Paris is the fact that I miss both Canadian and American Thanksgiving!  This year, I decided to invite a few expats over and have our own little Thanksgiving feast a la francaise.  It was harder than expected to round up some of the Thanksgiving staples (pumpkin and cranberry sauce to be specific!) but with a little bit of effort, I have everything I need to pull together one hell of a dinner!  Unfortunately, teeny tiny Parisian kitchens prevent me from roasting a full turkey, but turkey is still on the menu!  After a full day of preparation, the table is set, my guests are en route and my fingers are crossed that tonight will go off without a hitch!

I have a brief moment of down time while everything is in the oven, so I wanted to take a moment to wish you both a happy and safe holiday.  Can you believe the year has passed so quickly?  It feels like only yesterday I was enjoying Thanksgiving in New Orleans with ma famille!  How time flies!

Anyway, as I was baking my pumpkin pie this afternoon, I started thinking about the things I am thankful for.  The list is long but here's what nabbed the top spots...

My awesome family

My wonderful boyfriend

My incredible friends

My home in Paris

And last but not least...

My darling Eternal Interns!

Happy Thanksgiving, my darling girls!

Love always,

Bisous xx Ophelia

No More Mister Nice Guy (or girl...)

Congrats Rose on the new gig! Let the moolah roll in! I’m happy to report that it’s 3.30pm and I’m about to head out the door! Yes, Thanksgiving weekend here I come! El novio and I are heading down to the Keys to the Beach House for some well deserved down-time,  after the frantic morning I just had…

Monday, I had asked my intern to prepare some event budget reports my boss needed for “yesterday” (as she always says…), and I find out this morning that not only are the reports not ready, but they're totally wrong! Ahhh! I wanted to yell, scream, stomp! But, you girls know me, I stayed calm and told her that it would all be ok…I sat down and reworked through all of the excel files!

That is, until my boss peered from around the corner and got mad at ME! Yes my dear friends, as she walked by my desk, she slyly looked over her shoulder and scolded me:
- “You’ll get nowhere if you don’t start standing your ground. She didn’t do the reports properly? Sit her down again, explain and get HER to do them again…Defend yourself Flora…You won’t go far letting people get away with things…”

What? Excuse me? Am I getting in trouble now because of my kindness and patience towards my intern? When did being “nice” become a crime?

Taking a deep breath and a deep drag of a cigarette outside (only 1 I promise!), I realized  how right my boss was…She's not scolding me in a bad way, she's teaching ME what I have to do to get ahead! In a city like New York, where only the strongest make it to the corner offices, it’s not a matter of being good or bad, it’s a matter of being respected at work. The very history and landscape of this city confirms this fact: only the big, fierce, respected names are remembered (Carnegie, Morgan...Bloomberg) and only the tallest of the skyscrapers are most noted (Rockefeller, Empire...)... In a city where bigger is always better, respect and recognition make the difference.…and let me tell you girls, Big Apple respect is what this EI is gonna get!

With that, I’m off! I'm energized and respected ;) Have wonderful Thanksgiving day weekend chiquitas!

Battle Of The Sexes- Intern Style!

My new job is blowing my mind- in a good way!  I am loving the TV industry.  It is quite different from film and I am learning loads from a group of extremely talented individuals.  It is so nice to be back on a studio lot again as well, this time as a PAID intern!  I'm moving up the proverbial ladder, ladies, and it feels absolutely glorious.

What do I do at my new job?  To be honest I have spent the first weeks essentially competing with the male interns!  Being an intern on set involves a lot of lifting, shifting, standing, and all that jazz.  Well, I will be damned if I begin to be classified as the 'girl'!  It has happened to me in the past and I will never let it happen again.  We still live in a man's world, and therefore, everytime that physical labor is involved, I have been volunteering myself for the job.  Anything you can do, I can do better! Take that, other interns!  Kapow!

All kidding aside, I am throuroughly excited about all the new connections that are blossoming from this internship, and even though I still dream of the day that I can afford to eat regular steak meals, I am quite content and satisfied at this moment of my life.  How many people can sincerely say that?

A Decor. An Inspiration. An Ambition.

Ophelia, I remember the days we used to ride together after school!  Remember we would switch into jodhpurs and boots in the bathroom near the music room! Our lockers used to stink of manure!! Hehe!!

Well, while you are riding into new adventures, I’m appreciating my newfound “salary” and doing something that Eternal Unpaid Internships haven’t let me do since I lived at mum and dad’s: decorating. Ever since I moved into this little apartment and had to renovate it quite intensely (solo!), I’ve dreamt of one thing: simply decorating it and adding my personal touch. Luckily, now that I have a job and a regular salary…the decorating has begun!

Yesterday, el novio and I spent the day repainting the walls with the most brilliant hue of Farrow and Ball paint (I looooove!)…Scared of being asphyxiated by the smell, we headed to Gracious Home on 3rd in the afternoon to get more stuff, and later stopped by Scalamandre to take a look at fabrics for curtains…The prices were a tad to pricey which led us west to the Fashion District where I found the most beautiful Toile de Jouy for our curtains…I love! The apt still looks like a battlefield…but I just can’t wait for everything to be finished, settled and beautiful!

I’ve always loved décor, and over the years have gotten to know the fashion/décor districts of many cities…from the 40s in the West in Manhattan to Le Marche St. Pierre in Paris, the Design District in Miami and Queen Street West in Toronto…whenever I visit a new city I’m unconsciously drawn to the décor/fashion districts…Could interior decorating be my calling? Could this be IT for me? I'm not professionally trained but I've always been told I have an eye for chic, impeccable taste and have always loved antiques and fabrics...Has this weekend of decor and handywork defined my future trajectory? Could this old pair of jeans and paint-stained t-shirt be my new outfit of choice (hmmm no not really!), hehe! I’m serious…my dream one day is seriously to have my own corner office at perhaps my own interior decorating firm! Spend my days picking out different fabrics, side tables, art work….When I think about it, it’s the one job that blends all of my passions (and previous work experiences hehe!)…

My dad is right though…He says…
- Focus on what you’re doing now…build yourself a network (and fill up that bank account!)…get the skills one can only get in a corporate structure, and when you’re ready branch out and do it! The skills you’re learning in event-planning right now are an asset too any entrepreneurial adventure, especially in décor…

Look we’ll see...TBC…For now, I’m just enjoying my pad and must focus on my Eternal Employment.

Besitos chicas!

An Intern Takes the Reins

Hello my dearest girls,
Rose, I almost died laughing reading your latest letter.  I am so glad your humiliation translated into a job!  If we could all be so lucky!   And Flora, we will not discuss Kate and her Prince anymore.  I am so jealous! haha!  Not that I am interested in the balding future king of England, but could Kate Middleton be any more perfect?  It is nauseating to say the least!

Well girls, while the future Princess Catherine is flaunting her ring around London, your friend Ophelia is also keeping busy in Paris with other regal endeavors.  I have taken up horseback riding!  I took lessons when I was young but quit when life got in the way (actually it got too cold and I didn't like waking up at the crack of dawn!).   My father, who affectionately referred to me as Marie Antoinette, pointed out that a girl without a job should probably focus her energy into employment and not equestrianism, but everyone needs a hobby, no?

When you think about it, the life of an intern is a lot like riding, wouldn't you agree?  It is a series of obstacles and just when you think you have made it safely through the course, you run into a new hurdle! And so, I am going to channel my inner Betty Draper (could she look more fabulous in her riding duds?), my inner Charlotte Casiraghi (could she look more amazing in her Gucci?), my inner Zara Phillips and enjoy my new hobby while I am still a "lady of leisure"!  Because before I know it (fingers crossed!), I'll be back in the saddle at brand new job!

Until then, giddy up!  I'll just keep going with the flow... at a gallop, of course!

Interview From Hell

Ophelia, karma is a bitch and that ex-boss should watch Devil Wears Prada! And remember, she who laughs last laughs longest!

Did I ever tell you guys how I got my latest gig?  OMG, the interview was a bloody nightmare.  I wore an adorable black dress with a smart red blazer (Ophelia, you would have been proud!).  Little did I know that I would be made to sit on an incredibly low couch!  I mean I was basically sitting on the floor.  Well, seeing as the dress was almost down to my knees, I had decided the morning of to only shave from my knees down (as most women do!).  BIG MISTAKE!  By having me sit on this low couch I swear the assistant that interviewed me could basically see my crotch!  I wanted to dig a hole and crawl into it.  I was mortified.

Then she began to ask me the questions that I dread the most:
"tell me about a time when you were faced with a difficult decision and how you went about it"
"tell me about a time when you had a million and one things to get done and how you performed under pressure"
"tell me about a time when.... F*** OFF!"

Seriously, I was ready to punch the girl in the face if she uttered the words tell me about a time when again!  Plus I was paranoid about the fact that she was staring at the fuzz that I had left on my thighs.  How the hell was I to anticipate any of this?

Well, as luck should have it, I got the job and on my first day I totally cracked a joke about the disastrous interview and she barely even remembered any of it.  To think that one of the most horrifying experiences in my life was just another routine moment in hers!

An Intern Faster than...a Google Alert!

Ophelia! Chin up, head high! Who cares about that witch! Don't let her intimidate you - she's not worth your time! you know, lately I've been having a little trouble with getting people at work to acknowledge my new "non-intern" status, and I've been having my own conundrums with interns in the office... Let's just say that this ex-Eternal Internal was having a little trouble vith zee "interns"...that is...however...until now.

I just started working on a new event (gonna be awesome - linked to Art Basel Miami, but that's another email!), and I've lured a new intern to help me out since yesterday (the duffous that was rude last week is out...well for me!). She has been a pearl and blessing...and today...she alerted me on BIG NEWS! She's quicker than a Google Alert! (Maybe I haven't given her enough work...)

Ophelia you may want to cover your eyes (you may not take this news well!). Rose, listen up!

Prince William is engaged!!! Yes, yes! Prince William has announced his engagement to Kate Middleton!

Ok - Ophelia, I know this is tough...I know you were secretly hoping day...yes one day he would realize you were THE ONE (hehehe) but sorry miss, Middleton is the gal!

My little intern (well she's taller than me...)...was also quite depressed. I reassured her that Harry was still available, but that didn't seem to calm her spirits...what's up with that?! I'd take the little brother any day...

Interestingly enough, the entire office is seeming a little off today. Everyone has tuned into CNN... BBC... Everyone is gossiping...some almost seemed to be crying (tough to tell if they're sad he's off the market, or happy he's engaged!) It's insane! How can a Royal Engagement so easily paralyze an entire office! I guess it doesn't help that 90% of us are women and the 10% remaining are gay 30 year old men... But still! That's what happens when you work in communications for a feminine mag!! It's a mad-house!

I've sent my little (tall) intern off to run some erands...hopefully a latte can change her mind...

I'll keep you girls posted...but from one 20 something girl to another, Kate Congrats!!

The Bullied Intern

Hey girls!
I hope you are both doing well.  Flora, I am right there with you re "Is this it?"!  Although I haven't arrived at "it" yet, I am starting to think I don't ever really want to get there!  Especially if people like NM will be there too.  So who is NM you ask?  Well, I'll explain.  After a rather uneventful week, my Friday evening was completely and utterly ruined by a meaner than mean email from a former boss.  Why?  She had gotten word of a little blog called the Eternal Intern and she was threatening me via email to remove all mention of her!  I was hurt, then scared, then agitated and then irate.  How dare she threaten me!

I couldn't for the life of me figure out why a woman with so much power and such a fabulous job would go out of her way to intimidate a former intern.  Wouldn't it have been better to just turn off the computer and go home for the weekend?  Perhaps she didn't even consider how much harm one little email would cause this Eternal Intern.  Truth be told, I was choking back tears while reading.  Needless to say my Friday night was ruined.

Don't feel bad for lil' old Ophelia though.  I sent a dignified response clarifying my position, apologizing for the misunderstanding, etc.  Funnily enough, I have never even mentioned her or anyone working for her in my letters.... until now that is!  haha!

Bisous xx Ophelia

PS.  All this has again left me questioning the ways of the fashion world.  I think the three of us should get together and start our own business.  Rose will be the film expert, I'll talk style and Flora, well Flora, ummm... what is that you do again?  haha!  xx

Is this it?

So I’ve finally been able to get a little rest…since the Wednesday night fiesta downstairs that uncovered unwanted bags under my eyes on Thursday, I have finally been able to catch up on sleep! Thank goodness for Zitomers on Mad and their miraculous Guerlain eye cream!!

Last night I caught up with D. who I haven’t seen in soooo long! We went to Peels in the East Village…which was unsurprisingly delicious and really quite sympathique…We celebrated my ‘full-time’ gig, made fun of my head to toe Tory Burch look (ok I overdid it!), and we had a lot of fun (I have a tad bit of a headache today…) It was a sublime evening…until…yes the dreaded until…she asked me:
- Flora, you’ve been dabbling in so many different things for so long…so many internships…in the art world, fashion, jewellery, decor…hell you even have a Master’s in Finance…Where do you see yourself later on? What is it you really want to do? Is this job “it” for you?

Right then and there…I froze…The seemingly  fabulous dinner, had just turned into the interview from hell…

But D. is right…Is this it for me? I’ve always loved so many things…I’ve excelled in each field…and I have a veritable passion for all…But, where do I see myself? Is this really what I want to do? Do I really want to be working at X in communications planning events for the rest of my life…? Am I the only eternally indecisive EI out there?

I didn’t want to admit it, but NO this is not “it” for me…I’ve always been far too ambitious and, I’ve always been a dreamer…I didn’t want to insult D. who has pretty much (yet again) sold her soul to another art gallery…but there is no way I will be doing this forever.

I explained to her that I’ve dabbled in each of these different fields to understand what it is that I really want to do - what I really, truly love….and to one day…get ready, be my own boss! I’ve always admired entrepreneurs…and I don’t believe I could settle for less than a corner office later on (in my own headquarters ;) doing exactly what it is I love…I’d love to find a way to blend my passion for decor, and all that is luxurious, love for communications and business acumen…Ahaaaaa….

Girls, I also didn’t tell D. this…but I actually have begun starting my own side business…it’s related to these passions/loves…I don’t really want to speak much about it yet, as it’s still not totally 100%, but as soon as it is, you 2 will be the first to know!

Ok I must jet…I’m meeting my dad at Via Quadronno for a hot chocolate haha!! Perhaps be can help me with this new little venture ;) Flora never stops!

Flora's Dream: Peace & Quiet!

A girl can indeed dream my dearest Ophelia! But you know what: dreams are what make life worthwhile! My mum always used to tell me, how can one live without dreams? Dreaming keeps you moving forward! I love to dream! And, let me tell you, right now I'm dreaming for one thing: quiet!! What do I mean you may ask...well I just want friggin peace and friggin quiet!

New neighbors moved into the apt downstairs a month ago. When I first met them, I was so happy to see that a young couple with a baby and cute little Jack Russel were replacing the old lady who infested the floor downstairs with all her moth balls (she has finally headed to an old age home...). Omg! You can't even imagine how strong it stunk every time I walked past her door...So I considered myself lucky last month as I saw this sweet Yuppy couple take over Ms. Stinky's apt...

Lucky, that is, until I realized these ppl are party animals! They throw parties almost every Monday and Tuesday nights...I've stayed super passive for the past 3 weeks, but last night at about 1am I had it! I was woken up by loud thumping music, loud talking and laughing and a baby crying ever 2 minutes...yes, all this at 1am on a Wednesday night! I couldn't sleep. I couldn't focus. I tried cotton balls in my ears - no luck. A pillow over my head - no luck. And so, I threw a pair of jeans on, stormed down the stairs half asleep and decided to get mad! How dare they! How dare they make so much noise so late and WITH A BABY!!!

Unfortunately, the Yuppy nice couple just isn't so nice after all! The man was rude to me...didn't lower the music .... and they kept partying until 4am!! I decided to try and stick it out and camped out on my kitchen floor, which is a little more insulated from the noise...I am officially a freak! Luckily I was able to get a good 3 hours of sleep, but you girls should see me now...I have the biggest bags under my eyes, I can't focus and's not even TGIF!!!

I swear, if they ever pull a party like that again, I'm calling the cops! I am seriously falling asleep right now...despite the 4 Starbucks double espressos I've downed I still can't focus....and to top it all off I have a mtg with my boss in an hour and I'm so not ready!! F*ck!!!!!!!

A Girl Can Dream

Hello my dear girls,
I am so sorry for not writing sooner, but I have been doing a different kind of writing - letter writing!  As you know, I am a huge fan of the Let's Bring Back column on the Huffington Post and it has now been turned into an Encyclopedia!  I can't wait to purchase my copy.  Anyway, I was inspired by a recent round of "Let's Bring Back" and decided to sit down and write notes to people I haven't spoken to in a while (and to reach out to new people, including Lesley MM Blume, the journalist behind the column!).  After spending an ungodly amount of time on my computer last week, it felt so nice to sit down and write.  It is incredible how reliant we have become on backspace and spell-check - writing really is a mental exercise!

Naturally, my throwback to days gone by got me thinking about my current situation.  I look at columns like Let's Bring Back and I wonder why I can't have a job like that!  I have been going to interviews and applying to jobs just for the sake of applying, but I am secretly (ok, not so secretly) jealous of women who get to do exactly what they love!  Take Ms Blume, for example, what a fabulous job to write such a fun, inspiring column!  I was also recently put in touch with a very lovely friend of a friend working at a great UK publication. She also has the dream job.... her dream job!   Is it naive to want to enjoy my job?  I am lucky enough to be raised by parents who do exactly what they have always wanted to do.  Both have unconventional careers that reflect their interests and personalities and they seem truly happy.

I have decided, I will not settle.  I know what I would love to do, so why should I settle for less?  Call me naive, call me what you will, but there are people out there who are truly happy to go to work each day.... so why shouldn't I be one of them?

Bisous xx Ophelia

PS.  It doesn't help that I watched Cinderella yesterday, I am now a permanent resident of Disney dream world!  x

Never Fool an Ex-Intern!

Rose! Congratulations - good for you man!! Money is money, and any money is better than no money!! Good job scoring that paid internship!

I'm writing you girls from sunny FLA...I headed down to the Keys this weekend with the feels good to take a little sun, relax and do simply nada! New York is getting cool and autumn has clearly graced us with her presence... I'll leave MIA tomorrow morning with the first AA flight out to get back!

Speaking of work, another crazy 'intern-event' happened last Friday...It seems to me that although 90% of the office is beginning to understand that I am indeed a full-time employee and not an intern...10% is still convinced I am an intern - and funny enough those 10% are interns themselves.

I've been working on a European event...quite a lot of work and coordination...and an intern from the PR team has been working on it too. Friday we had a meeting about what has to be done, info that needs to be retrieved etc.... You will never imagine what happened - I'm running the meeting, I ask her (the intern) to do a certain amount of tasks for me, and she looks at me and says NO! Yes, you heard me right, and so I quote:
-"You know Flora, it's best if you do X and Y, I've got much too much too handle right now, I'm going to be unable to this.".

Yes!!! The intern, flat out refused to carry out the tasks that were assigned to her by a full-time employee!!! Where is the logic?? Shouldn't she be on her knees accepting any work assigned to her?? Shouldn't she be thanking me and assuring me that all with be done on time and in a perfected manner?? I was stunned! Shocked! What has the intern world come to? Who is this intern? How can she think she can just turn me down like that? Little does she know, I've been in her shoes before, and in no way would I ever act like that! On the contrary I worked my little butt off as an intern!! Why are "interns" making my new-found full-time employee title so dang difficult!

So with that, I called the meeting over. Headed straight to my into my email, and yes... typed an impossibly evil email to her to confirm that she WOULD indeed so and so, and CCd pretty much the whole department.....and ended off with a big "Thank You!" as if nothing had ever happened....Vive la passive aggressiveness!!!

Did she answer? .... Yes... and the work should be done early this week!! Yessssssss!!!!

Haha! Thought that would give you a little laugh!! As a word of advice to all interns hehe...Never fool an ex-intern...

Must run chicas, but besitos!!

Ain't No Stoppin Me Now!

Congrats on being awarded with your very own interns, Flora.  I also had the joys of that once and had mixed emotions about it, but such is the circle of life.

I am on cloud 9 this evening.  I found out today that I scored an internship working on a reality TV series!  Cue music: Celebrate good times!  Come on!

I don't know what to do with myself I am so flippin' excited.  No doubt that I will be celebrating (with money that I don't have) Hollywood style this weekend, since I start work this coming Monday!  My current financial situation is also taking a turn in a positive direction... my new internship is paid! I will be making a whopping 300 a week!   Hallelujah! At this rate, I will be able to pay back my student loans when I am about 50, but that couldn't be less of a worry to me right now.

I have never worked in TV and I am absolutely thrilled at the new doors this position will open for me.  I think I have a totally disillusioned idea of what it is going to be like, but I am up for the challenge no matter what.  I can feel it, this is going to be it for me, ladies.  Starting next week I am going to devote myself and hope that in the next year I will be a star!

An Eternal Intern Conundrum

Hola Chicas!

Ophelia, what a brilliant weekend - so jealous!! I'd love to spend my weekends in Champagne!

As for me girls, big news!! Haha! This is actually kind of funny and you may laugh...but my boss just came up to me and announced that I'm getting an intern! Haha!

It sounds a little crazy at the moment... she literally just came by my desk a few minutes ago... If there's anyone I wanted to announce this to, asap, it's you guys!

When she told me, I just kind of looked at her, in a bit of shock (I def tried to hide the expression on my face...)...I mean how is it, that I, an Eternal intern just a few months now getting my own intern? And honestly... having been that 'Eternal Intern' for so long, I don't really know how I feel about having someone work for me 5 days a week for a teeny stipend... no benefits... and no security...

I also know that should I 'get' this intern, there are no hopes that his/her internship will ever become a full-time position. It doesn't matter how amazing he/she fabulous he/she proves to be...The fact is, that this office has once again just frozen employment and any hopes that an internship could eventually lead to a job... are dead!

On the one hand I see this opportunity to finally have 'my own' intern, absolutely amazing and a veritable victory....yet, on the other, I feel like somewhat of a traitor to the 'Eternal Intern' community...I know how hard it is to be an intern, I know the ups and the downs, I know the good and the bad....I also know the reality of this proposed internship and the fact that no concrete job offer can stem from it for a potential candidate....

What do I do?

Back to work....

The Bubbly Intern

Hello my dear girls,
I hope you are having a lovely Halloween weekend!  I personally decided to sit this one out this year, so I hope you have fun stories to share!  I have had a pretty lazy weekend since last weekend was spent touring the beautiful region of Champagne.  As you can imagine, I thoroughly enjoyed myself!  The road trip was originally supposed to be a quick trip to the suburbs of Paris to see my aunt's show (she is a jazz singer as you know) but we decided to keep the car and explore Champagne!  Having lived in France for all these years and visited every year before with my family, I have been almost everywhere but Champagne!  Cross it off my list!  For a girl who loves bubbly as much as yours truly, I don't know what took me so long!

First Stop:  Reims
Sure, I love champagne, but I would be ashamed to visit a region solely for its alcoholic speciality.  Reims is home to the grandes marques of champagne, but also an older claim to fame:  La Cathédrale Notre Dame, where all the kings of France were crowned dating back to the 11th century!  Interesting fact: Napoleon chose not to hold his coronation at Reins, but Notre Dame de Paris instead.

To celebrate the boyfriend's fancy new job (yes, he is newly employed and I am not!), we stayed at the unimaginably beautiful Hotel Royal Champagne.  The views were stunning and the hotel itself was top-notch!

Second Stop:  Epernay
There is really only one reason to visit Epernay: Champagne.  It is an uninteresting little town expect for the champagne tasting and tours of the caves!  We opted for a tour of the Moët Chandon caves as the cellars stretch 28 km (18 miles!) underground.  Moët is owned by Moët-Hennessy the group that also owns other champagne heavyweights like Pommery and Veuve Clicquot.  The boyfriend was captivated by the fermentation process and science of champagne.  Truth be told, they lost me after the first fermentation but got me back at my favorite part of the visit... le dégustation!

All-in-in, a sublime weekend!  And don't worry, les filles, I bought you each a bottle of Champagne!

Bisous xx Ophelia
